When is the last time you had some great fusion cuisine? You know, that kind of food you experience when two styles or cultural heritages of cooking are melded by an enterprising and visionary chef? Well, I've been to Crane & Turtle twice and each time it was some of the most elegant, unique, delicious and interesting food I've had in DC since moving here in '08 from Manhattan. What a great addition to the Georgia/7th Street Corridor!
This small, delightful space is really an open kitchen laboratory that you can watch and delight in during your dining experience at this Japanese/French hybrid. While I won't subject you to my personal Yelpster style ego-driven judgements of specific menu items, you can easily find many professional and personal reviews online in the local media and on social media. What I will say is that last time I went with friends from the neighborhood, one was a picky eater, who during our experience tried and thoroughly enjoyed foods and ingredients she'd not dared to try ever before. The execution and presentation of each dish is simple and beautifully plated. Each plate is a separate and complete experience. I highly recommend trying one from each category: Amuse de Mer, Appetizers, and Mains. That, coupled with the expert recommendations of the attentive waitstaff make Crane & Turtle a lovely evening. Make sure to check out their well stocked list of special whiskeys, amaro and vermouths. And yeah, the desserts are equally special and well crafted.
Soon, you'll be just like me: figuring out a "reason" to book a reservation there (a must!) again soon!
